Chainsaw Buying Guide – Budget Chainsaws That Last Longer
There is a wide range of sizes available for chainsaws, from compact electric models to bulky petrol-powered models designed for more intensive work. However, you shouldn’t automatically assume that all petrol saws are excellent, nor should you presume that electric saws can’t compete. This chainsaw buying guide is designed for the handy person who expects quality without spending a fortune.
Many of the lighter-duty gas-powered saws that we’ve seen are now outclassed in cutting ability by the best electric models. Which now perform just as well and, in some cases, even better.
Saws that are larger and have a more extended cutting bar have a higher price tag than saws of a more compact design intended to cut more modest limbs. But bigger isn’t always better; a larger saw may be able to handle more complex jobs, but it’s also more challenging to control.
Key features to remember when purchasing a midrange budget chainsaw
Chainsaw Safety: It is possible to have a healthy fear of chainsaws without watching a horror movie. As per the Consumer Product Safety Commission (USA), these mighty instruments are involved in more than 27,000 accidents yearly. Australia has just as many accidents involving chainsaws per capita.
Cuts are the most common injury and tend to occur most frequently on the arms and legs. The chain on the saw can cause some of the most severe injuries when it becomes entangled and kicks back towards the operator’s chest and head.
These days, chainsaws come equipped with safety features, such as an automatic chain brake, that reduce the risk of kickbacks. But you still need to take some safety precautions, even if your model comes fully equipped with various safety features.
Warranty – ensuring a good warranty and backup service for whichever chainsaw your purchase is essential. When purchasing online, make sure you do your due diligence and determine whether the support will meet your expectation if something goes wrong with the chainsaw.
What’s included in this chainsaw buying guide.
We list several chainsaws and accessories from a single manufacturer. We have found their backup support excellent. Even so, you can expect a little time delay due to shipping the product back to them if required. They try to talk you through the process so as not to cause delays which I’ve found ok. They have never been nasty or short with me.
To ensure you familiarise yourself with maintaining and use of chainsaws, we provide a few tips throughout the article. Hopefully, they are helpful and guide you when making a purchasing decision.

Baumr-AG 62CC 20″ E-Start Commercial Petrol Chainsaw – Model SX62
The Genuine Baumr-AG Pro-Series is a carburettor that features direct air injection and comes with HUGE POWER. A well-balanced design makes it easy to use and maneuver and provides uncomplicated access to the engine, filters, and spark plug. A Patented Easy Start system and onboard tool storage are provided.
This design features a quick tension chain mechanism, integrated chain brake, and a Patented “A-VIBE” anti-vibration system. Meets or exceeds the safety standards AS/NZS and comes with a FREE TRIPLE SAFETY PACK!
In addition, the E-Start system, which is unique to the SX range, is brand new. Because of this patented technology, virtually anyone can pull start large capacity machines with minimal physical exertion. The E-Start system functions by combining two memory-retaining spring coils that are opposed to one another. When the user pulls the starter cord, a second coil builds energy. It then immediately releases all of that energy, which starts the engine immediately.
Spark Plug – There is a possibility that the spark plug will become detached from the spark plug lead. If this is the case, position the electrical lead so that it is draped over the spark plug terminal and then press down on it to ensure a secure connection with the terminal.
SX82 Baumr-AG Commercial Petrol Chainsaw with 24″ E-Start Bar and Chain
The legendary Baumr-AG Pro-Series is now available in a massive 24″ cutting length. Carburettor for direct air injection and a design that is balanced to facilitate ease of use and maneuverability
Simple access for maintenance to the engine, its filters, and its spark plugs. Easy Start system with a decompression valve, oversized air filter, and intake manifold has been granted a patent.
A chain mechanism with a quick tensioning system, an integrated chain brake, an automatic chain lubricator, and an adjustable chain oil feed.
Chopping: The massive bar measures 24 inches in length and has a sprocket nose with 12 teeth. This allows for an excellent transfer of cutting power from the chain to the wood. Baumr-Tru-Sharp AG’s technology is utilized to produce the premium complete chisel chain. Consequently, these chains generate very little kickback and, as a result, accurate cuts. A large dial on an adjustable auto-chain lubricator allows quick adjustments while keeping the chain well-oiled to prevent rusting.
Before using the saw and cutting, ensure that the chain is properly tensioned and that the chain drive cover nuts are correctly tightened. Since the chain on the saw will “stretch” with use, it is essential to check the chain’s tension before and while it is being used. When working with saw chains, it is crucial to use appropriate protective gloves because the cutters on the chains are incredibly sharp. DO NOT check or adjust the chain tension, and DO NOT check or adjust the chain tension when the engine is running.
MTM 62SX Commercial Petrol Chainsaw Pruner with 22-Inch Bar and E-Start Starter
The MTM 62SX Chainsaw is the best tool for cutting through wood. It doesn’t matter if you’re trimming hedges, felling whole trees, or cutting wood for the fireplace. The brand new ‘Easy Start System’ allows virtually anyone to get this beast going with minimal exertion, thanks to its user-friendliness. This ingenious system operates by pairing two memory-retaining spring coils instead of one another. A second coil builds up energy when you pull on the starter cord. It then instantly releases it, allowing for the most efficient starting possible.
You can rest easy knowing that your MTM Chainsaw will provide you with a premium cutting experience. Which includes a comfortable and ergonomic grab bar, the ability to cut in any direction, a superior foiled oil feed, and a premium saw chain. With a safety brake that engages at lightning speed. Naturally, all of this is backed by MTM’s unparalleled quality and a comprehensive warranty that lasts for an entire year.
Avoid Kickback: Under NO circumstances attempt to cut with the saw’s tip, nor should you ever let it come into contact with anything. When operating the machine, ensure you always have a firm grip on the front and rear handles. Always confirm the saw chain is sharp and the cutter shape and cutting depth are correct.
The standard angle for cutting is 30 degrees. DO NOT use the machine at a height higher than your shoulder in any way that prevents you from holding it securely with both hands. Or in any way that prevents the operator from seeing the entirety of the machine. Reduce the size of each piece of timber one at a time. Exercise extreme caution when inserting the saw into a cut that has already been made. Always be looking for shifting logs or other forces that could close in on or pinch the saw chain. Take a position to the side where the saw chain will be cutting. When using a plunge cutting tool, exercise extreme caution.

Testing: Put the chain brake in the “on” position, then start the engine so you can test its functionality. If you run the machine at full throttle for no more than two seconds while keeping the brake engaged, you can determine whether or not the chain brake is working correctly by observing whether or not the saw chain rotates. Do NOT use the machine if the saw chain turns at all while the test is being performed; instead, take it to an authorised service centre to have it serviced.
Model 72SX of the MTM Commercial Petrol Chainsaw comes equipped with an E-Start System and a 22-inch Bar.

Examine the condition of the air filter, looking for signs of dirt, debris, damage, and the like. If necessary, either clean or replace the element of the filter.
To clean air filters, start by rinsing the foam filter in warm water after washing it with a mild detergent. Then, set it aside to dry. If you’re using paper filters, the best way to remove particles is to blow them off with compressed air. The air is recommended to be blown into the filter from the engine side. It’s possible that brushing the filter’s pleats with a soft brush and tapping the element against a hard surface will help remove debris from the filter. Place a few drops of clean engine oil onto the foam filter, and then squeeze the filter several times to distribute the oil throughout the filter material and remove any excess oil. It is recommended that any dirt, cuttings, or other debris be removed from the air filter cover and the air intake assembly.

It then immediately releases all of that energy at once. This indicates that anyone can start this beast for the first time and every subsequent time.
Fundamental Pruning Recommendations
The information that follows is intended to serve as general guidelines for chainsaw use:
Taking Down and Removing Branches and Limbs from Downed Trees (Limbing). Be wary of potential hazards posed by the high kickback from other branches or the tree trunk. Keep an eye out for branches or limbs that are under tension and could suddenly move or launch themselves when cut. On the log, you should NOT stand. First, remove the thinner upper branches and then move down the trunk to the larger lower limbs.
The Process of Creating Log Sections (Bucking)
Check that the log is secure and cannot move or roll in any direction. Reduce the size of each piece of timber one at a time. NO OTHER PERSON must be allowed to hold the log. Using your legs or feet to steady the log is not appropriate. When sawing logs under tension or strain, you must be careful not to pinch the chain on the saw. First, cut from the side that is under compression, and then cut from the side that is under tension.

They have the grunt of a direct air injection carburettor, delivering more power per cc, making it ideal for finishing those smaller jobs. It punches well above its weight.
Fuel Filter: The machine’s performance may suffer, and the cause may initially be misdiagnosed as a problem with the fuel system if the fuel filter is dirty or clogged. Before making any changes to the speed of the engine’s idle, it is essential to examine the condition of the fuel filter. If the fuel filter can no longer function properly, it should be replaced.
The Importance Of Maintenance cannot be overstated in terms of chainsaw safety. A chain that has been properly sharpened, tensioned, and oiled speeds up the cutting process. This helps prevent kickback and reduces the wear on the chain and the bar on which it rides. When the chain is spinning, if it is too loose, it has the potential to slip off the bar and move towards the operator.
Remember Emissions: Even though amputations and lacerations are the most common injuries associated with chainsaws, all petrol-powered tools produce carbon monoxide. This tasteless and odourless gas can cause death. Never operate a petrol-powered device indoors or in any other enclosed area.
